Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP)
The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) Program is administered by the U.S Department of Energy. The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) near Carlsbad, New Mexico, is being operated to provide disposal of radioactive wastes resulting from the defense activities and programs of the United States. The New Mexico Department of Public Safety (NMDPS) in collaboration with the DOE, is primarily responsible for the State’s capability and continued assurance to provide the safe and uneventful transportation of radioactive waste in and through the state.
In this role, the New Mexico State Police (NMSP) are responsible to conduct level VI inspections on the WIPP shipments. These level VI inspections are conducted on commercial motor vehicles transporting transuranics and HRCQ of radioactive materials.
