Quay County, NM – On May 1, 2023, at 9:30 p.m. the New Mexico State Police investigated a fatal crash on Interstate 40 at milepost 354, east of Tucumcari.

The initial investigation indicates that a 2024 International Box Truck, driven by Diego Ignacio Castro Serrito, 18, of Fort Worth, TX, was traveling west on Interstate 40.

For unknown reasons, the International left the roadway and collided with the rear of a 2024 Volvo tractor-trailer parked on the shoulder. Serrito was ejected from the vehicle onto the roadway and then struck by a 2019 Freightliner tractor-trailer.

Serrito suffered fatal injuries in the incident and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator. The 46-year-old driver of the Volvo and the 50-year-old driver of the Freightliner were not injured.

Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in this crash and Serrito did not appear to have been properly wearing a seatbelt.  The crash is still under investigation by the New Mexico State Police.
