Espanola, NM – On Tuesday, November 22, 2022, the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau was contacted to investigate an officer-involved shooting involving the Espanola Police Department (EPD).

Agents learned at around 12:00 p.m., the Espanola Police Department (EPD) responded to the Pajarito Housing, located at 125 B Calle Del Sol in Espanola, NM, in reference to domestic violence call. When EPD officers arrived on the scene, they made contact with the suspect, identified as Jerome Naranjo, at the front door of the residence. Naranjo attempted to close the door on officers but was unsuccessful. As officers entered the residence, a physical altercation ensued. During the physical altercation, officers observed Naranjo armed with a firearm in his hand. At that time, an EPD officer fired his duty weapon striking Naranjo.

Naranjo was transported from the scene to an area hospital and later flown to a hospital in Albuquerque. He is currently listed in stable condition. Upon his release, he will be facing charges.

No officers were physically injured during this incident. For the identity of the officer involved, their duty status, and information on the domestic violence call or the charges that Naranjo will be facing, please reach out to EPD.

This incident remains under investigation by the NMSP Investigations Bureau, which works to independently determine the series of events that led up to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews. Throughout the process, investigative findings are shared with the district attorney for their review and consideration.

The New Mexico State Police acts solely as factfinders in its cases and does not determine whether the actions of an officer were justified in these types of matters. That decision rests with the district attorney’s office.
