McKinley County, NM – On May 5, 2022, at approximately 2:26 a.m., the New Mexico State Police investigated a fatal crash involving two vehicles on Interstate 40 near milepost 67, east of Prewitt, NM.

The initial investigation indicated a 2015 Chevrolet Malibu passenger car, and a 2022 Peterbilt Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) were both traveling west in the right lane of Interstate 40. For reasons unknown, near milepost 67, the Chevrolet was parked in the roadway when it was struck by the CMV. The driver of the Chevrolet, James Culbertson (65) of Indiana, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene by the Office of Medical Investigator. The driver of the CMV was uninjured.

It is unknown if alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash. Seatbelts were properly used by both drivers. The driver’s name of the CMV will not be released by State Police, due to no charges being filed. This crash remains under investigation by the New Mexico State Police.
