Albuquerque, NM- On March 19, 2022, at approximately 1:22 p.m., the Albuquerque Police Department (APD) responded to an Aggravated Battery call at the Rail Runner Transit Station located at 130 Montano Road NW in Albuquerque, NM. The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau was requested by APD to take over the investigation.
During the investigation, agents learned a male subject, later identified as Luis Sanchez (32) of Albuquerque, NM, got into an altercation on the train with another male passenger in cab #1008. At some point during the altercation, Sanchez brandished a knife and stabbed the male passenger. A security guard, who attempted to break up the fight, was also stabbed along with another female passenger. Despite being injured, the security guard was able to call in the incident on the radio and bring the train to a stop near the Montano Transit Station. Once the train came to a stop, Sanchez exited and began to flee southbound. Upon the arrival of APD officers, they contacted Sanchez and a foot pursuit ensued. During the foot pursuit, APD officers gave numerous verbal commands to Sanchez, which he ignored. APD officers took Sanchez into custody without further incident. During a search of Sanchez’s backpack, agents located a gun inside. The knife Sanchez used was located on the ground near the Rail Runner train.
The three stabbing victims, along with Sanchez, sustained injuries believed to be non-life-threatening. They were all treated on scene and transported by emergency medical personnel to an area hospital. Their conditions are not known.
