Quay County, NM – On February 25, 2022, at about 12:38 a.m., the New Mexico State Police investigated a fatal head-on crash on Interstate 40 near mile marker 340 east of Tucumcari, New Mexico.
The initial investigation shows a 2000 Chevrolet truck, driven by Kayla Corrales (27) of Grady, NM was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 40 near mile marker 340. The Chevrolet truck collided head-on with a 2012 Honda Pilot that was traveling east on Interstate 40. Corrales was airlifted to the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque where she succumbed to her injuries.
The driver of the Honda Pilot, a twenty-five-year-old female was transported by emergency personnel to a hospital in Texas where she is in critical condition. Four other passengers of the Honda Pilot a twenty-nine-year-old male, a twenty-six-year-old male, a twenty-two-year-old male, and a two-year-old were transported by emergency personnel to an area hospital for injuries believed to be non-life-threatening.
Alcohol does not appear to be a factor and seatbelts appear to have been properly utilized. No additional information is available at this time.
