Pecos, NM – On December 11, 2021, at around 9:30 p.m., NMSP uniformed officers were called to 1 Camino Don Luis in Pecos for a report of shots fired in the residence. Officers arrived to find a male individual, later identified as the suspect Mark Valencia, 40, of Pecos sitting in the driver seat of a van parked outside the residence. Just inside the front door of the residence, officers found Steven Singer, 40, and Eva Aragon, 48, both of Santa Fe, NM, deceased from apparent gunshot wounds. A third victim, the 63-year-old-male owner of the residence who had called 911 was hiding in a bedroom closet. He was not physically injured.

NMSP Investigations Bureau agents were called to the scene and learned that Valencia, Singer, and Aragon had been in the residence consuming alcoholic beverages during the day. At some point, Valencia and Singer got into a verbal altercation. Valencia went out to his vehicle and retrieved a firearm. Valencia returned to the front door where he shot Singer and Aragon. Valencia fired at least one shot at the 63-year-old-male but missed.

Valencia then sat in the driver’s seat of a vehicle parked in front of the residence until officers arrived. Valencia was arrested and booked into the San Miguel County Detention Center on charges of:

  • Murder in the First Degree (2 counts)
  • Attempted Murder
  • Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon
  • Shooting at an Inhabited Building
  • Negligent Use of a Firearm

This case is being investigated by the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the district attorney for their review and consideration.
