Torrance County, NM – On September 22, 2021, at around 6:30 p.m., a New Mexico State Police officer on patrol stopped to check on a disabled silver 2000 Honda CRV with Pennsylvania license plates on Interstate 40 westbound near milepost 191 near Edgewood, New Mexico. The vehicle was driven by a female, and it had two flat tires.

At around the same time, the New Mexico State Police was contacted by the New York Police Department (NYPD) requesting assistance in locating a homicide suspect out of New York. The suspect was identified as Haiyan Deng, 31, a female of New York, New York. NYPD had reason to believe Deng was in New Mexico, driving a Honda CRV with Pennsylvania license plates. Deng was reported to have a firearm.

The NMSP officer who was assisting the stranded motorist was notified of the request from NYPD. The officer identified the female driver of the Honda CRV she was assisting as Haiyan Deng. When the officer attempted to detain Deng, she resisted the officer.

A good Samaritan driving by saw Deng resisting the officer and stopped to assist. Deputies from the Torrance Count Sherriff’s Office quickly arrived on the scene and assisted the officer. Deng was successfully taken into custody without further incident. Deng was arrested and charged with resisting, evading, and obstructing an officer.

Deng was booked into the Torrance County Detention Center. She will be extradited to New York for her crimes in New York.
