Quay County, NM – On May 5, 2021, at around 11:30 p.m., the New Mexico State Police was alerted to a crash involving a pedestrian on Interstate 40 around milepost 342 east of Tucumcari, NM.

The initial investigation indicates that for unknown reasons, Edwin Coffey, 39, of Queen Creek, AZ was walking in the middle of the right eastbound lane of I-40 in a dark unlit area. He was struck by a 2019 Ford driven by a 58-year-old Murrieta, CA man. Coffey suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator.

Alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the crash which is still under investigation by the New Mexico State Police.
