Chaves County, NM – On April 4, 2021 at approximately 2:30 p.m., the New Mexico State Police investigated a fatal head-on crash near Crockett Road on NM Highway 2, south of Roswell, NM.

The initial investigation indicates a 2003 Oldsmobile Bravada SUV, driven by a 33-year-old male from Roswell, NM, was traveling southbound on NM Highway 2. As the Oldsmobile attempted to pass another vehicle in the opposing northbound lane, the Oldsmobile collided head-on into a northbound 2009 Ford Focus passenger car. The Ford caught fire and became engulfed in flames. The driver of the Oldsmobile sustained injuries believed to be non-life threatening and was transported by ambulance to an area hospital.

The driver of the Ford, a 17-year-old female and a passenger, a 12-yeard-old female, both from Dexter, NM sustained fatal injuries in the crash. The 17-year-old and the 12-year-old were both pronounced deceased on scene by the Office of Medical Investigator.

Alcohol and or drugs appear to have been a factor in the crash. Seatbelts appear to have been properly utilized by the occupants in the Ford. For the privacy of the family, the identity of the two teenagers will not be released by State Police. This crash remains under investigation by the New Mexico State Police with the assistance of the New Mexico State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit and Aerial Drone Team. Based on the outcome of the investigation, charges will be pending for the driver of the Oldsmobile.
