Otero County, NM - On July 25, 2020 at around 9:00 p.m. the New Mexico State Police responded to a fatal crash involving a 2014 Polaris All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) near Laborcita Canyon Road and Sunset Drive in La Luz, NM north east of Alamogordo.
The initial investigation indicated the ATV, driven by Lyle Winnicki (52) of Cedar Crest, NM, was travelling in the area and went off the road into the canyon. Winnicki sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced deceased by the Office of the Medical Investigator.
Contributing factors in this crash appear to be alcohol use, speed, and rider unfamiliarity with the terrain. This case remains under investigation by the New Mexico State Police.
