Santa Fe County, NM - On May 27, 2019, the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau was contacted to investigate a police shooting involving the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Department (SFCSO)
On May 27, 2019, SFCSO deputies responded to a Domestic Violence call at 32 Quail Run Drive south of Santa Fe. As Deputy Frederick Trujillo arrived at the residence, he observed a male identified as Melisco Gallegos (25) of Santa Fe, NM yelling at deputies who were on scene prior to his arrival. Deputy Trujillo attempted to make contact with Gallegos, who fled the residence in a Station Wagon. While Deputy Trujillo and other deputies were completing their investigation, Gallegos returned to the residence. He exited the Station Wagon, and got into the driver’s seat of the white GMC pickup truck that was on the property, and left the property again. A short pursuit ensued, which led back to the residence. Gallegos began ramming two parked SFCSO police vehicles. Gallegos then intentionally drove towards a police vehicle that Deputy Trujillo was inside. Deputy Trujillo feared he was going to be crushed inside the police vehicle and discharged his department issued weapon striking Gallegos’s vehicle. Gallegos then drove towards the other deputies, and struck one of the patrol vehicles again. Gallegos fled on foot, and was taken into custody without further incident a short time later. Deputy Trujillo and another SFCSO deputy sustained minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital. Gallegos was uninjured from the incident. Gallegos was charged with the following:
- Aggravated Batteryk on a Peace Officer (3 Counts)
- Criminal Damage to Property (4 counts)
- Resisting, Evading or Obstructing an Officer
