UPDATE: Police Shooting in Alamogordo

This update contains details of the shooting and the name of the officer involved.

Alamogordo, NM - On October 14, 2018, at approximately 11:21 a.m., Alamogordo Department of Public Safety officers were dispatched to 702 South Florida Avenue space #721 regarding a shots-fired call. Otero County deputies and New Mexico State Police officers also responded.

After officers arrived they learned the suspect, identified as Gregory Allen Tilly (55) of Alamogordo, had shot out the rear window of his mobile home. Officers attempted to get Mr. Tilly to exit the residence but he refused. While negotiating with the officers Mr. Tilly exited his mobile home holding a shotgun.

Mr. Tilly then pointed the shotgun at New Mexico State Police Officer Fabian Picazo. Officer Picazo fired one round from his department issued rifle striking Mr. Tilly. Officer’s began to render life saving measures and Mr. Tilly was transported to Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center where he later died from his injuries.

This investigation remains active and open. Officer Picazo, who has been employed with the New Mexico State Police for three years and was previously employed by Otero County Sheriff’s Office for thirteen years, was placed on standard leave. Upon completion of the State Police investigation this case will be forwarded to an assigned district attorney’s office for review.

A State Police officer fired one round from his department issued rifle. Mr. Tilly was struck one time. Emergency aid was rendered to Mr. Tilly and he was transported to Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center where he later died from his injuries.

This investigation remains active and open. The details of the shooting remain under investigation. The name of the officer involved will not be released until all interviews are completed. The officer has been placed on standard leave. Upon completion of the State Police investigation this case will be forwarded to an assigned district attorney’s office for review. When more information is available it will be released.
